that night
I rode a taxi that night -
the driver asked if I was going to dance
and I told him I’ll see the game that night.
He said he didn’t approve of that.
That made me glad.
I sat alone and drank some gin,
I’d decided not to smoke that night.
I was waiting for a stranger in an empty bar,
convinced I won’t fall in love that night.
You were late, I hate when guys are late
and I was getting even more convinced.
And when you came, I lost myself.
I hadn’t planned it to happen that night.
I liked that.
I checked the bathroom to check my hair.
We talked, we laughed, we smoked.
I only smoked when I was with you…
You tried your knife on the wooden table,
and it was sharp, unlike your eyes.
I never got drunk that night.
No alcohol would ever get through
the adrenaline in my blood that night.
We parted at dawn that morning.
I didn’t like that.
